First year French stresses fundamental language patterns based on familiarly everyday situations. Pupils master the language patterns, the correct pronunciation and the characteristic intonation of French. Cultural enrichment materials help pupils develop understanding and appreciation of French-speaking regions, particularly France, Canada, and French-speaking Africa.

This course continues to emphasize skills needed to understand both spoken and written French. Reading and writing take on greater importance as pupils gain familiarity and confidence with the spoken language. Grammar, basic language patterns, and word order are systematically taught to facilitate comprehensive and correct usage.

During this course, pupils extend their listening and speaking vocabularies. The reading program stresses direct comprehension without translation. Pupils will develop skills in French composition and other written activities. More detailed attention is also given to the history of French-speaking cultures.

This course is like the traditional French 3 course in that it extends listening and speaking vocabularies. In addition, the student will spend more time reading and discussing prose and verse. There will also be more extensive work on the composition and writing activities. For many students this course will be a Prerequisite for IB French I.

This course is chiefly a German literature course, dealing with 19th and 20th century literature. The pupils should have a strong background in vocabulary and grammar and a commitment to work on individual reseaarch.

In the Latin I course, the stress will be upon developing skill in the use of the basics of the language: vocabulary, inflected forms, and grammar. A strong emphasis on translation will be evident throughout the year. Woven into the year's course will be units of mythology, Roman history and culture, and the indebtedness of the English language to Latin. While the students Latinwill develop stronger English vocabulary and grammar skills, knowledge of Latin is the major benefit of the course.

Prerequisite: Latin 1

Students will continue to develop the skills gained in Latin 1. A heavier stress will be placed upon translation, with excerpts from Roman authors providing the course content in the second semester. By the end of the year, students will have developed a greater awareness of the indebtedness of Western literature to the works of the Classical World.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor

After a review of grammar, students will increase their ability to translate fluently passages from Roman mythology and Cicero's orations. The techniques of poetry scansion will be previewed. Special projects will increase a student's historical, cultural, political, and constitutional background. An extensive unit in word derivation is designed to prepare students for college entrance exams. All students participate in the Wisconsin Jr. Classical League Convention and the National Latin Exam.

First year accelerated Spanish is for the student who has not studied foreign language in middle school and desires to eventually be a full-diploma IB student. This course includes an intensive study of grammatical and speaking skills to enable the student to continue to the Pre-IB Spanish 3 course the following year.

In third year Spanish, pupils enlarge their vocabularies and review grammar essentials. Emphasis is placed on communication both in speaking and in writing. Collections of stories, short novels, or plays are read and discussed in Spanish. Writing skills are expanded through guided sentence construction and free composition. The histories of Spain and Latin America are also studied.

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor

This course is like the traditional Spanish 3 course in that it will enlarge vocabulary and review grammar essentials. Emphasis is placed on communication in speaking, writing, and listening. The Honors student should expect a more intensive study of literature and more writing practice. For most students this course will be a prerequisite for IB Spanish 1.

Prerequisite: Spanish 3

This course continues to develop understanding of speaking, reading and writing skills. Principles of pronunciation are reviewed and added stress is placed on achieving intonation as used by Spanish-speaking people. Stylistic improvement in language use is developed through pupil research, study and discussions of literature, periodicals, and newspaper. A wide variety of writing practice is pursued.

Prerequisite: Spanish 4 or IB Spanish

This course is designed for students who have completed the Spanish 1-4 program or the IB program and want to maintain their speaking and grammatical skills. Emphasis is placed on acquisition of advanced grammar and social communication skills to prepare students for advanced placement at the college level. In addition, a contemporary Hispanic novel will be studied.

Designed to allow students who have finished the IB program to continue their contact with the language, Spanish 6 focuses on reading Hispanic novels and writing reports in Spanish. Individual research and independent study take place in a Spanish speaking setting.

Italian I will give students the opportunity to experience the beginning of communication in Italiano. We will concentrate on initial grammar, but with a focus on speaking and becoming comfortable in basic, essential communications. There is also the opportunity for students to acquire extensive cultural knowledge of the Italian way of life, culture, and traditions, which surround us in the United States and extend from Italia.

Venice
Italian 2 will serve as a continuation of Italian I. Students will increase their knowledge of grammar and again, students will have a greater opportunity to develop their speaking skills along with comprehension. This course will also offer cultural studies, with a look at some grammar and vocabulary-appropriate stories in Italiano. This will serve to facilitate a development of reading and writing skills as well as an initial exposure to Italian literature.

archThe International Baccalaureate foreign language program requires a student to demonstrate proficiency in the four communication skills of reading, writing, understanding and speaking. These skills are developed by IB candidates during their third and fourth years of foreign language study. The IB classes provide a thorough review of grammar, reading experience in a literary text and in a book on the history and political structure of the country, oral experience through conversation and formal presentation of reports, and writing experience through essays and compositions. All reading, speaking and writing will be conducted in the foreign language.
