Rufus King has an early admissions policy with all applications due by 3:00pm on November 7, 2005. As 90% of all graduates are college bound, graduation requirements comply with and exceed regular MPS requirements. Students are required to take four years of English, a semester of Speech, and three years of Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science, and two years of a foreign language. Because of these rigorous graduation requirements, students are expected to come to King with a strong academic preparation in middle school. Daily attendance habits and responsible conduct are essential to succeed at King. There are no half-day programs, nor early graduations.
Rufus King is an authorized IB diploma school, which has been nationally recognized twice as a Blue Ribbon School (1983, 1996). Redbook Magazine named Rufus King as the best Wisconsin Public High School in 1994 and 1996. Rufus King was ranked number one in the state of Wisconsin according to Newsweek Magazine “America’s Best High Schools”. King is a citywide school with an academically challenging college preparatory curriculum. Accelerated courses are offered in all subject areas, along with many extracurricular activities.
The emphasis on academic excellence is reflected in the strong college bound curriculum, especially in the International Baccalaureate (IB) classes. The IB Diploma program is a rigorous pre-university course of study, which meets the needs of the highly motivated secondary school student. The IB curriculum, shaped over the years by educators committed to international education, involves the student’s final two years of the secondary education sequence. During that time, study is undertaken in the broad range of subjects, selected under the guidance of the school appointed IB coordinator.
Every student is expected to be in the IB or Pre-IB program. The high standards implicit in the IB examinations assume high levels of achievement or preparation at the junior high and pre-IB levels (Grades 9 and 10).
The IB program allows juniors and seniors to earn credentials recognized for course credit or advanced placement at many colleges and universities throughout the world. For upperclassmen, the IB program involves two years of preparation for examinations that are evaluated and recognized internationally. The IB student may work toward individual subject certificates or an IB diploma.
