writeProspective students must submit their application and portfolio by Tuesday, October 25, 2011 which includes their grades, evidence of extracurricular involvement.   They also must complete an entrance assessment in mathematics and writing.  Students must attend one of two testing sessions, administered on Saturday, October 15th at 9:00AM or Tuesday, October 25th at 6:00PM.  Each prospective student will be evaluated on a maximum of 20 points.  Attendance at the open house on October 13th at 6:00 PM is strongly encouraged.

REMINDER:
All applicants must complete an application cover form and submit all required documents (grades, attendance, and extracurricular verification) by the end of testing on Tuesday, October 25, 2011.  Students and parents are responsible for submitting all materials directly to Rufus King.

A complete portfolio must include all of the following components to be considered:

  1. Portfolio Cover application
  2. Copy of final 7th grade report card (June, 2011 including attendance)
  3. Extracurricular/Service form with proof of participation
  4. Language & Math Assessment at Rufus King.  Attendance is mandatory at one of the sessions.

The applications can be turned in during the testing period or directly to the Rufus King Guidance Office during the school day.  Upon submission of the application, a signed receipt will be issued.  Therefore, please do not lose this carbon.

Point Distribution

School Performance -9 points distributed as follows:
-Attendance            0 - 2 points
-Academic Achievement        0 - 7 points

Extracurricular/Service Participation  - 2 points

-Language Assessment        0 - 6 points
-Math Performance task        0 - 3 points

Parents - Please Read!

On the day your child comes in for testing

  1. Please enter the building on either the Olive street or 19th Street entrance
  2. Upon entering, make sure your child picks up a ticket indicating the room he or she is to report to for testing
  3. If your child has a disability and requires special needs testing, he/she should report to room 205
  4. If you are turning in your child’s application at this time, please report directly to the cafeteria while your child is testing
  5. Once you are in the cafeteria, please pick up a numbered ticket so we can call you when we are able to process your child’s application
  6. When this is complete, you may wait for your child in the cafeteria.
  7. If you are going to be waiting for your child, and will not be turning in your child’s application at this time, you may go to the cafeteria.
  8. If you will not be present, and your child will be turning in his/her own application, they should report to the cafeteria immediately after their testing is done to turn the application in.


When turning in your application:

  • Because of the large number of applications we will be processing, please make sure your application is complete.  There will be an information table set up to answer any questions.
  • Be sure the application includes verification for extracurricular activity.
  • We do not want you to turn in an incomplete packet if you will be able to produce material at a later time.  The faculty members processing your application will ask you to return to school with the completed application by October 25, 2011.
  • Due to the large volume of applications we do not accept applications faxed or mailed.  The applications can be turned in during the testing period or directly to the Rufus King Guidance Office during the school day.  At that time you will receive the yellow carbon of the white Portfolio Cover Application, which is included in this packet.  The carbon will be signed by a Rufus King staff member and will serve as proof of your turning in the application by the deadline.  Therefore, please do not lose the carbon.
  • We will not be able to make copies of application or other documents.
