Celebrating Our Diamond Jubilee In Style

Bold, Beautiful Improvements Proposed for King’s Campus

king_plaza_Page_1_Image_0002Rufus King opened its doors to students on September 4, 1934. This fall marks its Diamond Jubilee, or 75th anniversary.

The Rufus King Alumni Association hopes to work with King’s parents and teachers to recognize this important anniversary and King’s importance to its neighborhood and to the City of Milwaukee.

Josh Ehr ’00, is an architect who studied at the University of Minnesota.  He says that Rufus King’s building “has the presence of a church within an old village.  The weight, mass and presence of the building becomes the anchor of the community and as a result the homes are organized around it.”

With Josh’s help we hope to begin a landscaping project for the school.  The goal would be to make the grounds more friendly to the school and to the neighborhood and more beautiful.

We will be seeking contributions for the project.  One vision is for a class or individual to contribute $1,000 for the installation of a bench.  The contributor would be recognized with a plaque on the bench.  It is also hoped that we can sell paving bricks that would carry the names of contributors.  These would be installed on the grounds.

If you wish to help, contact Joy Markert Adams ’64.  Contributions can be sent to the Diamond Jubilee Fund, c/o Rufus King Alumni Association, 1801   W. Olive St., Milwaukee, 53209-6898.
