Lisa Kois has traveled an unconventional path since graduating from Rufus King High School in 1986. A self-described scholastically mediocre student at King, Lisa went on to graduate with honors from both UWM and the University of Minnesota Law School.
As a human rights lawyer, writer, researcher, road painter, and filmmaker, Lisa uses different forms to explore and expose issues of political violence, repression and armed conflict. She is driven by a strong sense of social justice, which informs every aspect of her life and work.
Based in her adopted home of 10 years, Sri Lanka, Lisa has worked with the United Nations, as well as a number of local human rights and media organizations in Sri Lanka and the United States. She has published extensively on issues of violence against women and human rights and has recently completed her first documentary film, the art of forgetting, which explores issues of political violence and memory in Sri Lanka.
With the birth of her daughter – Aaliyah Medin – on March 14th 2006, Lisa began what she describes as her greatest adventure.
