Mayor Tom Barrett has proclaimed Thursday, October 11, 2007 as Family Unity Night, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Re-connect, Re-unite, and Re-establish Family Ties

Where?  Gather your family around the dinner table at your home, place of residence, a restaurant, a park, or “mom’s” house for dinner to: re-connect, re-unite, and re-establish family ties.

Who?  All City of Milwaukee residents and their families

Why?  Statistics* show teens that frequently eat with their families are:
•    Less likely to get into fights
•    Less likely to drink, smoke, or use drugs
•    Less likely to get depressed or think about suicide
•    More likely to delay having sex
•    More likely to get good grades

Suggestions for conversations around the table: What was the best part of your day?  What did you learn today in math?  How can you use that information in your life?  What are you reading in school?  Do you have a favorite book or story?  Do you feel lonely or left out at home or at school? Who is your best friend and why?  What do you think is a good age for people to start dating? What should be the next family activity/outing? What are your thoughts about smoking cigarettes? Why do you think it is important to graduate from high school?  Can we create a poem about tonight?

Family Unity Night is sponsored by the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Public Schools, and the Milwaukee Teen Pregnancy Prevention Network (MTPPN).
