Created in 1921, the National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization that recognizes and encourages academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. Those ideals of scholarship, character, service, and leadership remain as relevant today as they were in 1921.

The NHS is the leader among organizations and societies that promote appropriate recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Thousands of schools are chartered and their chapters follow the constitution.

National Honor Society membership is often regarded as a valid indicator that the student will succeed in life and particularly in studies at the post-secondary education level. The Honor Society member has already exhibited academic achievement, leadership, honorable and admirable character, as well as service demonstrating that the member is willing to use talents and skills for the improvement of society.

The Rufus King Chapter of the National Honor Society follows closely the sentiments of the national organization. Listed below are the things that this chapter uses to determine the eligibility of a student asked to become a member of NHS:
  • Sophomores need to have a cumulative GPA of a least 3.3 at the end of the first semester
  • Juniors need to have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 at the end of first semester
  • Seniors need to have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 at the end of first semester

Students meeting the above requirements will be sent a letter and application form in the spring inviting them to apply to the Society for membership. Applicants will be evaluated with emphasis placed on academic accomplishments, academic goals, community service involvement both in school and outside of school, leadership roles, character as a positive role model, as well as teacher evaluations and reccommendations. Applications are next scrutinized by a faculty council of 5 or 6 members approved by the principal, who will vote on admission of the applicants. Students are urged to begin performing community service activities early in the school year in preparation for applying for membership to NHS.

Students are urged to begin performing community service activities early in the school year in preparation for the completion of their invitation to the chapter.

All present members and accepted inductees are required to attend the induction ceremony at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2006. For more information, download and print:
